Contents

An essential element of a comprehensive school-wide anti-bullying prevention program is equipping all students with the mindset (attitudes and coping skills) they can employ when faced with victimisation to regulate and respond effectively emotionally.

This program can be incorporated into school timetables. Alternatively, one session can be developed with students being shown the complete animated video program supplemented by activities drawn from the material in the teacher’s guide.

Program details

Follows three students, each experiencing different forms of bullying
  • Alan (physical and verbal victimisation).
Alan, who is Asian, has one parent and is short and overweight. He is being repeatedly verbally teased (ethnically slurred) and pushed and shoved by one student and two other schoolmates. He is feeling down, hopeless and furious, believing there is little he can do to make the bullying go away.

  • Dan (social isolation).
Dan desperately wants to join a social group at school but is being isolated and rejected by students who laugh at him and call him a “freak.” Dan is getting quite depressed and is thinking of staying away from school, having given up on any hope of being popular and having friends.

  • Sarah (cyber-bullied).
Sarah is sitting in her bedroom at home studying when she receives an SMS that circulates to all her friends. The message states that she was caught “messing around” with someone else’s boyfriend at a party and threatened to harm her at school. Sarah is mortified and depressed. Not only did she not “mess around” at the party, but her reputation was being unfairly dragged through the mud.
